West Virginia has finally fully eliminated the tax on social security benefits! The legislature passed an initial tax cut in 2019 for lower-income West Virginians who receive social security. This year, we passed the complete elimination of the taxes on social security for all recipients – reducing the taxes by 35% in the first year (that would be this year, retroactive to January 1) and phasing out the tax completely by 2026. West Virginia joins a majority of states who don’t tax social security benefits – making us more competitive with our neighboring states and making West Virginia a great place to retire.
